Best Surf Camps in the Algarve for Beginners (2026 Guide)

Best Surf Camps in the Algarve for Beginners (2026 Guide)

This is my guide to the best surf camps in the Algarve for beginners.

I finished my month-long surf trip around Portugal here last summer, splitting my time between Lagos and Sagres.

If you’re thinking about learning to surf in the Algarve, it’s a great place to do it, but it’s not quite as straightforward as other parts of Portugal.

You’re not just turning up and surfing the same beach every day. Conditions can vary a lot, and the best spot isn’t always right on your doorstep.

That’s where surf camps come in.

They handle all of that for you. Checking conditions, picking the right beach, organising transport, and making sure you’re in the best place to actually progress.

I ended up doing a mix of camps while I was there, from more social setups to more structured coaching, so I’ve pulled together the ones I’d actually recommend for beginners, depending on what kind of trip you’re looking for.

The Surf Experience

First on my list of the Best Surf Camps in the Algarve is The Surf Experience.

This is one of the more well-known surf camps in Lagos, and it’s a very specific kind of experience.

I stayed with them on their 6-day package, based out of their surf house in the centre of Lagos.

The setup is pretty simple, but it works. You’ve got a big shared house, lots of communal space, two terraces, and a constant flow of people coming and going. It’s very social, and that’s really the main draw here.

Most days follow a similar rhythm. Head out in the morning in the 4×4 to whichever beach is working, surf, come back, eat, hang out, then do it all again the next day.

Everything’s taken care of. Lessons, equipment, transport, breakfast, and lunch are all included, so you don’t have to think too much about logistics.

In terms of the surfing, you’re getting consistent time in the water, but it’s not overly structured or progression-focused. I wouldn’t say this is the place to go if your main goal is to improve as quickly as possible.

That said, I had a lot of fun here.

It’s one of those camps where you end up meeting loads of people, spending a lot of time in the water, and just enjoying the whole experience. I made some really good friends here, and that ended up being a big part of it.

Tiny Whale Surf Lodge

Next on my list of the Best Surf Camps in the Algarve is Tiny Whale Surf Lodge.

This is at the other end of the spectrum to The Surf Experience.

Tiny Whale is one of the more expensive surf camps in the Algarve, and it’s much more of a premium, retreat-style setup.

The lodge is set out in the countryside about 10 minutes from Lagos, so it’s quieter, more private, and feels like a proper escape rather than staying in town. The accommodation reflects that too. You’ve got everything from small shared rooms to large ensuite rooms, cabins, and even safari tents, all done to a really high standard.

But the main difference here is the coaching.

This is much more focused on progression. Small group sizes, personalised coaching, video analysis, theory sessions, and a proper structure to the week. It’s the kind of place where you’re actually working on your surfing, not just getting time in the water.

They’ve clearly thought about the whole experience.

You’ve got daily yoga, surf skate sessions, and a full food setup with breakfasts, beach lunches, and proper dinners cooked by an in-house chef. It feels more like a surf retreat than a typical surf camp.

It’s not as social in the same way as something like Surf Experience, but that’s kind of the point.

You’re there to surf, improve, and recharge a bit, rather than just go out every night.

Sagres Sun Stay

Third on my list of the best surf camps in the Algarve is Sagres Sun Stay.

This one is a bit of a hybrid.

I stayed here on their 3-night surf package, which included one lesson, and then switched to accommodation only, which I actually booked through Hostelworld as it worked out cheaper than extending directly.

That flexibility is what makes this place work so well.

You can do a short package to get your bearings, understand the local surf, and then just stay on and do your own thing, which is exactly what I ended up doing.

The setup is more built-out than a typical hostel.

There’s a pool, gym area, co-working space, kitchen, bar/restaurant, and even things like massage and yoga you can book. It feels more like a surf base than just somewhere to sleep, especially if you’re staying a bit longer.

It’s set slightly back from the main beaches, which is probably the only downside. It’s about a 20-minute walk to Praia da Mareta and around 25 minutes to Tonel. I didn’t mind it, but it’s something to be aware of if you want to be right by the water.

On the surf side, the package is pretty light compared to a full camp.

You get one lesson, transport to the best spot that day, and all equipment included during that session. It’s enough to get a feel for the area, but not really designed as a full progression-focused week.

Sagres Natura Surf Camp

Last on my list of the best surf camps in the Algarve is Sagres Natura Surf Camp.

If you’re looking for a more traditional surf camp experience in Sagres, this is probably the best option.

Compared to Sagres Sun Stay, this is much more structured and focused on surfing.

You’ve got a full week setup with daily surf, coaching, and transport to the best spots. Mornings start with breakfast, then you’re in the van heading to wherever the conditions are working. Sessions are longer, more consistent, and built around actually improving rather than just getting a taste of it.

You also get things like video analysis and theory built in, so it feels much more progression-focused.

The house itself is a big, traditional Portuguese surf house.

Lots of communal space, a big kitchen, outdoor areas, and a really social setup. It’s not luxury, but it’s comfortable and well set up for a week of surfing. The vibe is relaxed and friendly, and it’s easy to settle in and get to know people.

Location-wise, it works well.

You’re about a 10-minute walk from Praia da Mareta, so you’ve got easy access to one of the main beaches, and you’re also close to the centre of Sagres for restaurants and bars. It’s a good balance between being near the surf and still having things around you.
