Best Surf Hostels in the Algarve (2026 Guide)
This is my guide to the best surf hostels in the Algarve.
If you don’t want the structure (or price) of a surf camp, hostels are a really good way to do a surf trip here.
That’s what I ended up doing during my month-long surf trip around Portugal last summer.
After doing a couple of surf camp packages in and around the Algarve, I switched to hostels and organised everything myself. It worked well once I had a rough idea of the area and how the surf worked.
The main thing is choosing where to base yourself.
Most hostels are in either Lagos or Sagres, and they offer quite different experiences. Lagos is bigger, more social, and a bit more of a general travel hub. Sagres is smaller, quieter, and much more focused around surfing.
In this guide, I’ll run through the hostels I’d actually recommend, based on location, setup, and how well they work for a surf trip.
Banana Beach House

First on my list of the best surf hostels in the Algarve is Banana Beach House.
This is the ‘Nº1 hostel for surfers staying in Lagos’, and realistically the only true surf hostel in the area.
This is the one I’d look at if you’re planning on staying in Lagos.

They run daily surf lessons straight from the hostel, so you don’t need to organise anything separately, and everyone staying there is there to surf too. It ends up feeling more like a mini surf camp than a standard hostel.
The location is also very good.
You’re about 200 metres from Praia Dona Ana and a short walk from other beaches, so you’re close to the water, but still only around 10 minutes into Lagos town.
The vibe is social, but in a good way.

They run group dinners, activities, and there’s a big rooftop terrace where people tend to hang out, so it’s easy to meet people without it feeling forced. It’s definitely geared towards travellers who want a mix of surf and social.
The rooms are also well thought out for a hostel.
Each bunk has blackout curtains and charging points, so you’ve still got a bit of privacy when you need it, which makes a difference on longer stays.
Sagres Sun Stay

Second on my list of the best surf hostels in the Algarve is Sagres Sun Stay.
This is one of the more built-out hostel options in Sagres, and it sits somewhere between a surf camp and a normal hostel.
It’s also the cheapest option on this list, so a really good choice if you’re travelling on a budget but still want something well set up.

I stayed here on their 3-night surf package, and then switched to accommodation only. That flexibility is a big part of why it worked so well for me.
You can treat it like a surf camp, or just use it as a base.
The setup is more like a small complex than a hostel. You’ve got a saltwater pool, gym area, co-working space, kitchen, bar, restaurant, and plenty of space to hang out. It’s designed to be somewhere you can stay for a while, not just crash for a night.

They also run their own surf school, so you can book lessons if you want, but you’re not locked into a full package.
Location-wise, it’s slightly set back from the beaches. It’s about a 20–25 minute walk to the main surf spots, which isn’t ideal if you want to be right on the water, but it’s manageable.
The trade-off is that you get much better facilities than most hostels in Sagres.
The Lighthouse Hostel

Next on my list of the best surf hostels in the Algarve is The Lighthouse Hostel.
This is one of the more elevated hostel options in Sagres.
It still has a social feel, but it’s a bit more polished than your typical backpacker hostel. Everything feels well thought through, from the layout to the shared spaces, and it’s the kind of place you can actually relax in, not just sleep.
They’ve put a lot into the communal areas.

There’s a pool, big gardens, rooftop terrace, BBQ area, and plenty of space to hang out, so you’ve always got somewhere to be, whether that’s relaxing after a surf or meeting people in the evenings. It’s social, but in a more relaxed, grown-up way.

You’ve also got a good range of accommodation options, from dorms to private rooms and even bungalows, which makes it work whether you’re travelling solo or want a bit more comfort and privacy.
Location-wise, it’s set back from the main beaches, so you’re looking at a bit of a walk to the surf spots, similar to Sagres Sun Stay. Not ideal if you want to be right on the water, but pretty typical for Sagres.
Algarve Surf Hostel

Last on my list of the best surf hostels in the Algarve is Algarve Surf Hostel.
This is probably the best-located hostel in Sagres if surfing is your priority.
You’re about a 10-minute walk from the main beaches, which makes a big difference here. You can actually get to the water easily without overthinking it, and you’re also close to the town centre, so everything feels pretty convenient.
The setup is a traditional surf house.

Big communal spaces, outdoor areas with things like a BBQ, pizza oven, and hammocks, plus a proper shared kitchen and lounge. It’s designed to be social, but still relaxed, and you’ve got a good mix of people there for surfing.
They also run surf packages, so you can go down the full camp route if you want, or just stay there and organise your own sessions.
Rooms are well set up too.
Dorms have curtains, charging points, and a bit more privacy than usual, and there are private room options if you want something a bit more comfortable.
It is one of the more expensive hostel options in Sagres, but you’re paying for the location and how easy it makes everything.
