If you’re travelling solo and want that instant “I’ve found my people” feeling, this is your best option in Peniche.

This place is very intentional about what it is. It’s not just somewhere to sleep. It’s a social hostel, built around solo travellers who actually want to meet people. Think shared dinners, pub quizzes, surf days, random conversations that turn into plans for the next morning. That kind of vibe.

And it works. The reviews are almost suspiciously good, with people consistently talking about how easy it is to connect and how quickly it feels like a little community.

Location-wise, it’s set in Ferrel, which is exactly where you want to be if you’re surfing. You’re close to Baleal, Almagreira, and a bunch of different breaks, so you can move around depending on conditions rather than being locked into one spot.

A few things I personally like:

Free breakfast (always a win when you’re surfing twice a day)
Daily activities, so you don’t have to overthink meeting people
Surf lessons and rentals with transport included
Family-run feel, not corporate or overly polished

But, it’s definitely not for everyone.

They’re pretty strict on the concept. It’s solo travellers only (no groups), there’s an age limit, and the whole experience is geared towards being social. If you’re someone who wants your own space, or you’re travelling as a couple, this probably isn’t the one.

Next on my list of the Best Surf Hostels in Peniche is Malacuna Peniche.

This is the one I keep coming back to, and the more I look into it, the more it feels like the obvious choice.

First, the location is so dialled.

It’s easily the closest hostel on this list to Baleal beach, which is exactly where you want to be. You’re looking at around a 15-minute walk to the main surf spots, which means you can check the conditions, grab your board, and just go. No taxis, no planning, no waiting around. For me, that alone is a big deal.

Then there’s the setup itself, and this is where it really stands out.

It’s not just a hostel, it’s more like a full surf base with everything built in:

On-site café and restaurant (so you’re not constantly figuring out food)
Laundry facilities (underrated but essential on a surf trip)
Coworking space and meeting rooms for work sessions
Cinema room and shared spaces that turn into social areas in the evening
Evening events like karaoke, live music, beer pong, etc.
Surf-friendly setup with rentals and lessons available in-house

It’s one of those places where you could arrive and not need to think about anything else for the whole trip.

And then on a personal level, this is where it really wins for me…

It just looks comfortable.

I’m at a point now, where I’m happy to pay a bit extra for things like bunk curtains, decent beds, and clean, modern showers. It makes such a difference, especially if you’re staying for more than a couple of nights. And from everything I’ve seen, Malacuna leans more towards that slightly more premium, well-designed hostel experience rather than the typical chaotic surf house.

Also, I’m usually working while I travel, even if it’s just a few hours in the morning, so having a proper cowork space is a big tick. It means I can actually get my work done, close my laptop, and then go surf without that lingering “I should be working” feeling.

And considering everything you get, the price is actually pretty decent. It sits in that sweet spot where it feels like an upgrade from a standard hostel, but without tipping into boutique hotel pricing.

WOT Peniche Social

Finally, last on my list of the best surf hostels in Peniche is WOT Social Peniche.

Where places like Malacuna lean into surf-first living, WOT Peniche Social is much more about space, energy, and social atmosphere.

The first thing to know is the location. It’s based in Peniche town rather than Baleal, so you’re slightly further from the main surf spots. You can still get to Baleal and Supertubos easily, but it’s not that “roll out of bed and into the water” setup.

That said, what you get in return is a much more lively, built-out hostel experience.

This place is big. Like, really big. It actually has one of the largest indoor common areas of any hostel in the area, which completely changes the vibe. You’ve got loads of space to hang out, meet people, and not feel crammed into a small surf house.

And it leans hard into that social side:

Bar on-site (always a good sign)
Big communal areas and shared kitchen
Games, foosball, even a trampoline
Evening entertainment and a “hangout” atmosphere

Accommodation-wise, it’s also more flexible than most hostels. You’ve got dorms, but also private rooms, studios, even apartments. So it works whether you’re solo, with friends, or want a bit more space.

This feels like the most social option on the list, but in a slightly different way to 33 Hostel.

33 is curated and intimate. This is bigger, more open, and a bit more free-flowing. You could easily meet loads of people here, but you’re not locked into a structured experience.

The trade-off is the location. If surfing is your absolute priority, I’d still lean Baleal. But if you want a mix of surf, social, and a bit more going on in the evenings, this is a really solid option.
